DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.
We NEED diarists! Your diary can be elaborate and full of photos, a simple story of your own quilting history or that of someone you love, a discussion of a current project or a technique you're learning, new adventures... You could post quilt retreat-day recipes (things like crockpot meals, so food appears without much attention from you)…
We could do show and tell or open thread, also, but either way, we need diarists to host. It is EASY if you're willing to take the chance. We NEED diarists! As I have noted before, I, perhaps foolishly, joined two Block of the Month (BOM) clubs last year. Both clubs would be demanding, but interesting. One is from Shabby Fabrics, the other Pieceful Gatherings.
This month I'm working one of the Pieceful Gatherings blocks. However, I wanted to change the block design a bit. I'm not a fan of drooping flowers, so I thought I'd rearrange the left side. No drooping tulip, rather a drooping brown plant with small red flowers. Yes, I swapped out the gold flowers from bright red ones. I liked the pop more.
To start, I laid a piece of transfer/tissue paper on the left side, and with a felt-tip marker noted the key reference points of the watering can and where I thought I’d want the flower and leaves for the third tulip. I temporally placed the tulip flower where I wanted it and, with a magic marker, drew on the tissue a new arrangement.

When it came time to lay all the pieces down and temporally press them in place, I wasn't completely happy with the new arrangement. Overall ok, but the design needed some tweaking. I wanted the red flower head to move out to the left more and down a bit. Also changed the location of the tulip and leaves a bit. Below is the final arrangement under the tissue so you can see how it changed. The changes don't show as well as I'd like.

But below is the final version. Obviously not all embroidery is finished yet and not all wool pieces are fully appliqued down. It has more symmetry than I usually prefer, but still better to me than a drooping tulip. I also think I’ll embroider another brown skeleton leaf on the left. Maybe when it’s all embroidered, it won’t look so “empty” on that side and it won’t need the additional leaf. And maybe I’ll rip out the embroidery on the left and move it back in closer to the watering can. I can’t decide.

So what are you quilting?
